I love going to the movies... who doesn't?
The problem is that when I want to buy a ticket, it can be frustrating,
time-consuming, and inefficient. That’s why I decided to create MOVIEZ.
It's my little way of making our lives on this planet a little more bearable.
You might think I'm being overly dramatic, but frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

"I'm a bit of a control freak. I need to research before I do or buy anything because it calms me down." Stanley complained that every time he buys
a movie ticket, he uses sites like Rotten Tomatoes
to get all the information he wants to know (like the cast and crew, reviews, etc.). I figured, why not make all that info accessible in the app itself?

"There are a few movie theaters in my town,
and every time I want to see a movie, it takes me
a long time to browse through all the apps and sites until I find the movie I want."
May says she’d like to have an app that can filter
all the movies and cinemas in advance according
to her location and time of day.

"I love movies so much that I actually prefer going alone."
Thomas likes to unwind with a movie after a long and stressful work day. The problem is that it's usually rush hour at the Cineplex. So, although he buys his ticket in advance, he still needs to wait
a long time in the queue to buy popcorn and soda.

My research shows that no single app out there brings together all theaters and movies
in one place. None use basic smartphone abilities such as GPS & time of day to filter movies for the user. The users can't use the app to buy food, and in some cases,
they can't find comprehensive info about the films.

Houston, we have a PROBLEM!
3.
There's a lack of information – about the cast and crew, reviews
from unbiased external sites (Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB ), etc. -
that moviegoers need to find the perfect movie for them.
2.
Every movie chain has its own website/app, so you need to browse
a few apps and/or sites until you find the movie right for you.
1.
Even if you buy a ticket online, you still need
to wait in the queue at the snack bar.

the mission...
should i choose to accept it

"I feel the need, the need for SPEED!"

Save time by filtering every movie and every cinema in advance,
according to the user's location and time of day.

"Show me the MONEY!"

Allow users to pay for everything in advance, including food and beverages,
and reduce the time they need to wait in line at the snack bar.

"The truth?! You can't handle the TRUTH!!"

Provide all sorts of movie info to users in the app itself
to prevent them from grazing in greener pastures.
Bonus feature

“You had me at HELLO.”

Create an app that's as fun and entertaining from the get-go as it is efficient.

Colors and style
This app was designed with great passion and love for cinema,
and I wanted to let the users feel like they are in a movie theater.
To do so I used these colors:

Walter White

The Black Pearl

Red eye

Cold Heights

I chose the Black Pearl color (Ship Ahoy! Arrrr) for the background to emphasize the colorful movie posters and the neon-style colored buttons and icons.

Text colors - I chose White and Fire Bush Yellow
which are in perfect contrast to the Black Pearl colored background.

The bottom navigation bar is semi-transparent and blurry
so even when the users scroll down they can still feel and see
the movie posters behind it.

When I approached the design of the buttons
it was important to me that they'll be playful as they were efficient.
That's why every single button in this app has its unique personality.

The Challenge
Working on this app was challenging.
Here are some of the issues I encountered.
1. The filtering system
The big issue I had with the home page design was the filtering system.
How on earth could I filter so many theaters and movies easily and intuitively?
Option 1:
The tab system - I used 3 tabs - theater, movie, and time & date. The problem with this design is that it required a lot of clicks just to filter the movies, which is the first action users need to do. This clunkiness might cause users to exit the app before realizing its strengths.

Option 2:
The floating filtering button - This was a more elegant solution to this problem, but it added more screens for the users to go through to pick the right movie for them. This option made the user experience more complicated and less friendly.

The Solution:
I suddenly realized that I was neglecting basic features that every smartphone has: the GPS and clock. So, I used the users' location and time of day to automatically filter movies for them. I also added
the distance from the user's location to the movie theater and the genres filter.

2. Choosing a seat
Movie theaters usually have a lot of seats, and the standard solution is to cram all the seats into one screen and let the users pinch in and out on their phone screen to choose the seats they want.
My research shows that this method is less than optimal because users can accidentally pick another seat while
they pinch the screen.
The Solution:
I've split the theater into four sections, so once the users pick
a section, the chosen area is enlarged and the seat buttons
are big and can be easily selected.

Let’s look at the
Big picture
Home Screen

On this screen, the automatic filtering system kicks in.
Users can also use the genre buttons to fine-tune
the filtering according to their needs.

Search Bar
(with a twist)

If users can’t find what they want, they can
use the search bar. To spice things up, every time
the user taps the search bar, it will show a quote
from a famous movie and a shot from the film.
If the user clicks on the photo, they’ll get some trivia/easter egg information about the movie.
Search results screen

Once the users start typing, the app will automatically show the relevant results and a short synopsis
of the movie. Not enough info? No problemo!
The collaboration with Rotten Tomatoes will kick in and the user gets instant access to all the info RT has on that movie. Once the user is done, they can return to the app and continue with the ticket-purchasing process.

Purchasing process

Once the user chooses the film they want to see, they proceed to ticket and food purchasing. While the app saves the date and time of the chosen movie, the users can still change these if needed.

they can't refuse
The business angle

Collaboration with Rotten Tomatoes:
Business-wise, it's a win-win collaboration between the Moviez app and RT. Moviez app users get in-app access to the RT database, and RT gets much more traffic in return.

Collaborating with cineplexes:
Why should a movie chain collaborate with Moviez?
Well, it's no secret that movie chains make most of their income from selling food – and this app helps them do just that! Every cinema chain can use this app to increase their revenues by selling more food and beverages at special prices in advance, which will drastically reduce queues at snack bars and result in happier customers.
Furthermore, the app can use pop-up messages to inform potential customers
in the vicinity of a movie theater about special sales available only to the app’s users.
